The Power of Stories | Matt Golding
How people are changing their worlds
Other worlds are possible. Not only that, they exist alongside ours already. This is a truth that's difficult to remember when we're confronted with the global shitshow that is our geopolitical, ecological and climactic collapse. But communities everywhere are facing down the barrel of the future by taking it into their own hands. Filmmaker Matt Golding is documenting their stories—and turning the world of narrative strategy on its head doing so.
For some years, I've been working with Matt and his team on Antidote, a project which tells stories of community power and radical social change across the UK. Matt wanted to figure out how to tell these stories in a way which felt equally inspiring and accessible, without the off-putting earnestness that a lot of "positive news" leans into. The results speak for themselves. He's created viral shorts of these communities, a podcast series, and documentary footage which tells these stories in a way that really makes you feel that change, whilst hard work, may not be as difficult as we are all led to believe.
He joins me to discuss Antidote, the narrative strategy behind it, and share some of the incredible projects we've discovered from around the UK, including the impoverished community just outside of Bristol who now own the largest on-shore wind turbine in the country. Visit the website to discover more of these stories and, importantly, how you can get involved where you are.
