Dear Rachel- firstly thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your work on trying to keep our planet and all of our amazing life forms thriving.
I am looking at your web site on my phone. I like the sections but find the front page too busy and confusing. The front picture makes me feel blurry. I would prefer less on front page - more on who you are what this website is for etc - how to sign up and then through the drop down navigation allow people to explore the content. Not sure about calling everything a crisis? People coming to your site are aware of the many different crises. I just thought it did not read so well as in crisis crisis crisis. I am not denying that they are. Just a kind of editorial view point. Xxxx
I agree with you that it feels busy—would it feel better if there was a block between each section, with some info about me/the project/how to sign up? A good example of what I'm talking about is here, on the About page: https://planet-critical.ghost.io/about/
The new layout looks great. It'll be much easier for new subscribers to find content without navigating the whole history. Personally, I'd make the section headers (Political Crisis, Energy Crisis etc..) on the homepage a bit more prominent.
Hey Rachel. Just chiming in on the matter - Aesthetically everything looks nice and clean. The page weight is reduced (Substack = 4.74 MB, Ghost = 1.42 MB) and carbon emission is as well (Substack = 1.6 g / page view, Ghost = 0.55 g / page view). Since we could all strive to be more like Kris De Decker in this digital age, here are some comparative numbers coming from his solar powered / optimized website - page weight = 549.12 KB and carbon emission = 0.21 g / page view. All of that to say your efforts are certainly worthwhile.
Looks really good! Wondering if there is justification for having a section devoted to our food systems? Since 5 out of 9 planetary boundaries are primarily transgressed due to our food systems (and every one of the 9 are affected by how we make food), this feels to me like it needs a bit more prominence. Just an idea! Thanks for all your super interesting conversations with experts and visionaries from around the world!
I agree with Lesley in general. Repetitive use of the word 'crisis' is questionable. I would add: bump up the font size of each category heading with maybe a single sentence defining the scope.
The human crisis is really about an emerging relational ontology covering psychology, spirituality, social transformation, etc. This is why a defining sentence might be useful. How about referring to the Human Promise? Overall, the home page needs more space. As it is, it conveys the dimensions of crisis and emergency with urgency, which is a tool of modernity, a head cluttering and soul depleting gestalt that feels reactive. How can you convey your own spacious, dedicated, immersive and integral perspective?
I am agreeing with Lesley that the home page wants to tell us more about who you are, whereas a menu directing the curious to separate pages on each category will give you more space to add a sentence (or two) about each conversation and to define the categories a little more. I suggest looking at Nate Hagens website, The Great Simplification.
You've done so much great work. Let the website itself, in the ways it invites more than perfunctory engagement, evoke a new paradigm.
Hi, I like it! The layout is comfortable on the eyes but fresh. I very much like the topic sections. Could you add a section for an introduction to everything? Maybe some background/historical context on these topics? And any kind of list of organizations doing good work about them? It's hard to keep reading about the magnitude of our current problems as if they're a sudden fire that sprang up, and also as if the only thing anyone can do is walk their own teeny little teaspoon of water over to whatever raging flame is nearest. Rather than join ongoing bucket brigades, stamp out root causes together, get survivors safely out together, you get the idea. Collective, effective, helpful, pertinent stuff. Just my thoughts. Thanks for all your powerful and great work!!
The date an article was published is best remaining for better context - if updated you could add that date as additional info. Agree with Lesley just keep categories simple remove crisis. I would remove article numberings as this may imply prominence. Also somewhere to see all and navigate to the various categories would be good. Some articles would sit in more than one category. Are there a religion, spirituality or culture sections?
As someone who regularly points people to your work, having the 'Start Here' page is ace. I have some specific suggestions for that:
- Love that your article at the top, cos it's one of the summaries I've come across.
- Is there a way to see the section titles, then have them 'open' up [I think it's called an accordion in website speak?!]. What I mean is, at the moment, I'd have to scroll a long way to get to the political crisis. If I'm new, I feel like it would be useful to see the all the categories, then pick which one I'm most drawn to.
- And maybe an acknowledgement that the categories - energy/economic/ecological etc - are somewhat arbitrary [i.e. that most of your episodes touch on most of the categories]. Appreciate that might not be helpful to people just starting though!
I don’t usually like changes to a website Rachel, particularly one that’s been going for sometime, you get used to where everything is and it’s idiocies, but I like this new layout and navigating around it, great job🤔
OMG this is gorgeous!!! Love the design, things are easy to find, I love how you've categorized topics from the podcasts, that's very helpful. Simply gorgeous.

Yes I do think blocks are better and clearer

I guess you'll be able to make adjustments if issues crop up but it looks excellent to me.
