I like the way you have framed the Rule. There are bottom up regeneration movements such as the Design School for Earth Regeneration that are aware and accepting of the collapse caused by global overshoot and are working to reversing the harm at the bioregional level (without illusions: it's a 200 yr project). Also Vanessa Andreotti's work on hospicing modernity. If you haven't interviewed her yet please do.

This is such a cogent perspective on how our lives are lived. It reflects a central tenet of Buddhism and even in this country we have the Hippocratic oath for the medical profession framed in the same way. So there is precedent! A very simple concept with enormous ramifications - it should be the first paragraph of a written constitution.

Yes, we must insist that any mention of rights is paired with responsibility.

Any mention of liberty paired with accountability. (I live in Virginia, where there is a "Liberty University." Where's "Accountability University"--we need one!)

Any mention of "owning" land or anything paired with stewardship and care. Actually, I'd abolish the word "own." How absurd that many on our earth claim to be able to "own" a piece of it. Rather, we need to use "hold legal title to," with the caveat that legal and lawful don't mean "just," or at least don't mean just often enough.

I watched the series Fargo recently. A dark TV series for sure. But I cheered when one of the less appealing characters called out the "Constitutional Sheriff" [played well by Jon Hamm] by telling him only babies are allowed to have freedom without responsibilities (I think those were the exact words).

We all need to push back vigorously whenever the irresponsible try to slip by without recognizing those fundamental pairings.

Doesn't the replacement or modification of the 1948 UN Bill of Human Rights by the 2001 (?) Earth Charter embody responsibility? I hope Planet: Critical can look into the Earth Charter story. Also Earth Laws.

Most pre colonial human societies had legal systems that ensured harmonious relationships and systems of dispute resolution. The notion of "original instructions" in Algonquin cultures states that at the time of creation each being was given its specific responsibility for the benefit of the whole earth organism, just like each cell of our body has its responsibility to collectively make our hukan body function .
