The ultimate form of 'citizen involvement/engagement' in key-decision making/government is direct democracy (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_democracy). Making it implementable is possible with new distributed ledger technology (DLT). There are about 4 software startup efforts who have tried to 'invent' it, but have not yet been widely successful (see an example at https://democracy.earth/). It is likely that hybrid forms will emerge, and evolve, rather than a direct jump to this purer form of participatory government. The point is, it is now possible. Such enabling technology was not available to the inventors of democracy - the Greeks - even though it was thought of way back then - yep, they conceived and actually debated direct democracy way back then. They opted for 'limited' form of representative democracy instead (but no slaves, etc.).

This TED video is by another suggested possible (female) podcast guest https://www.ted.com/talks/pia_mancini_how_to_upgrade_democracy_for_the_internet_era. This talk led to democracy.earth (long story).

Well that was a joyous discussion Rachel.

It's refreshing to hear a more positive, and dare I say hopeful, conversation amongst all the gloom and frustration that surrounds our existence.

Thanks as always,

P.

What a wonderful episode! I am feeling hopeful and empowered. We held a People's Assembly here in Swansea last night as part of the Extinction Rebellion bus tour with over 50 people and all their priorities were to act in community to be the change by trying things out together. I am sharing this with all participants. What a great bit of synchronicity that this followed from last night. Thanks again Rachel. I've order Joh's book.

Some quotes from Jon that resonate:

“What we really want in this moment of time is agency.”

“We will hold the question of how we are going to get through this together.”

“You can’t have paradigm shifts without a paradigm to shift to”

“An arts project that imagined participatory democracy”

A thought on the above. Is Jon himself unconsciously perpetuating the very paradigm he wants to be shifting away from, when he talks about participatory democracy - that is politics and government - as the kind of agency we want?

A quote from Rachel: "Nothing is going to happen if we don’t create a new media landscape.”

What if the new media landscape we need is reporting on individual contributions being made to local community engagement in globally curated conversations about what is fiduciary and what is not fiduciary in a new global stewardship economy of well-being as a new 21st Century Global Citizens in a new 21st Century Global Commons of Fiduciary Money?

In the paradigm we now live, Money does not matter. Finance does not matter. Institutions do not matter.

That paradigm is failing in large part because in truth Money does matter, Finance does matter and Institutions do matter.

And the most important institution that matters the most in the shaping our future is an institution of Money for Finance that in our current paradigm is not event ackowledged as existing: the institution of Fiduciary Money - the tens of trillions, collectively, worldwide, of society's shared savings aggregated into social superfunds for retirement income security in the future (pensions) and income security for civil society institutions, now and in the future (endowments), with the unique fiduciary power to negotiate, and the unique fiduciary purpose to negotiate towards income security in the future, and the unique fiduciary accountability to our common sense of prudence and loyalty in the deployment of fiduciary money to finance fiduciary-grade enterprises to shape a fiduciary economy, now and in the future, both equally, forever.

What if we open our imaginations to the possibility that Fiduciary Money does exist, and explore the agency it gives us to participate in social decision making about where the money can and should be made to go to finance enterprise to shape the economy in which we want to live?
