Long overdue, thanks for broaching the topic, and what a great conversation! Excellent to hear her criticism of the Sustainable Development Goals and the stress on rights rather than responsibilities, she cuts right through all the noise and distraction. One other controversial idea that I missed here is euthanasia. Decriminalising and making acceptable birth control and abortion is incredibly important, but in my opinion we should also take a good hard look at (literally) the other end of the equation and decriminalise and make discussable euthanasia.
On a side-note, on this topic you might also be interested in the book "Should We Control World Population?" by Diana Coole.
Thank you TIB - and for interacting so thoughtfully on Twitter too. I agree with you completely on euthanasia and would have mentioned it had I only thought of it at the time. Having acted as a kind of 'death douala' to a dying friend some years ago, and having had a midwife and my first little daughter as birth attendants for my second, I feel myself to be deeply interested in midwifery for both bookends of life. If only we can create that more wise and humble society where birth and death are understood and supported - rather than profited from, in bulk - as powerful, meaningful and eventful life transitions. (PS - both daughters were conceived on birth control, sigh, but I love them deeply.)
