This is a huge topic and I'm not surprised that so much remained unexplored. There are two things in particular that I took away from this interview. First, how medicine, like so much other technological innovation, has only focussed on the shiny, sunny uplands of new treatments and totally ignored the predictable trail of pollution and harm that might follow in its wake.

Second, that the focus on lower income groups provides much more bang for your buck in medical care as indeed it does in economic terms where redistributing excess profits to those struggling to meet basic needs would both raise them to a more acceptable standard of living (and remove a huge source of anxiety) as well as boosting the essential parts of the economy.

Both of these point to the excessive accumulation of wealth in corporations and individuals and the element of greed (and I would add Power) that Martin put forward as the main causal factor in our global 'predicament' - to quote Nate!

This is definitely a subject to return to as even though events may overtake us we should at least have a handle on our priorities and the opportunity to reframe our values around living well and dying.

I knew it wouldn’t take long for this to boil down to letting people die and reducing average lifespans to medieval levels.

Fascinating, and inevitably a limited perspective. Most of the health economy is an illness treatment economy. And precious little of it recognises that our physical and mental health are deeply entwined. Degrowth in this sector means understanding far more deeply the source of our innate wellbeing and natural wisdom. From there our mental and ultimately our physical health improves, as our approach to supporting everyone's good health would be based in an integrated appreciation of its psychological and spiritual foundation.

Rachel, I have been trying to unsubscribe because I just don't have time to absorb your great work. Even hitting the button on this page does not offer the option to unsubscribe. This is the only way I have to request that you terminate my sub. Thanks. And why is this difficult?
