I have been thinking about the marketing since 2007 when I sold solar mostly domestic water heaters, a few solar air heaters, and a few solar water both domestic and home heaters (expensive), I burned myself out (this ended in 2010, it was too hard and I ran out of money) doing over 400 in home presentations and sold over 100.

The formula that triggered the most sales was a combination of the SEEARP Grant, a localized rebate from Focus on Energy, and a Federal Tax Credit (only works for people who pay taxes, those paying higher rates get higher but limited amounts.

A few observations: In home units are not subject to investors siphoning off the surplus, I presented a lot of reasons why to do this the one that triggered the most sales was as an investment with an automatic escalator return on investment that increased as energy prices increased that no investment fund payments like centralized power pays. Although I don't know for sure how many, Conservative Republicans made up the bulk of the sales as they could write a check and recognized the numbers. One particular professor of a local college told me after the presentation they had already decided to buy a Prius, even after agreeing with all of the presentation, including the parts of the fuel being a finite resource and the pollution effects, but they still decided to buy a fuel efficient car. I explained what Jevon's Paradox was and he was miffed. His wife just sat there the whole presentation, which takes an hour, mostly explaining how the system works, and looked quite judgmental. That one more than any got to me.

The take away should be any subsidy money should go directly to the buyer, the owner of the building.

I don't know how anyone is going to tell the hunters and fisherman they can't have a truck and boat and gun, they will surely foment a bloody revolt here so don't go there.
